Without capital punishment (the death penalty) our lives are less secure and crimes of violence increase. Capital punishment is essential to control violence in society.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

Band: 8

Before discussing about the essential role of death penalty, we should think about the meaning and purpose of any kind of punishment. Considering that the purpose is to prevent the guilty from being nasty again, one may support an argument in favour of the suppression of capital punishment. However, there is another problem: a punishment is also useful to scare people and to make them fear the law. In fact, take a young misfit as an example.(句點!!) He has grown in a violent atmosphere, influenced by(分詞構句) older delinquents. He lives in the streets and gets no aim but to survive. Such kind of person may kill someone for money, or even just for fun. Why would he fear jail? Life might be easier for him there.

In addition, in many cases, if everyone behaves normally and obeys the law, we can benefit from penalty reductions. However, those who may commit a crime should be warned; they have to know that the law is a frontier. When they cross or violate the boundary of the law, they will lose lives / it will cost their lives / they are running the risk of losing lives. That’s why capital punishment helps keeping a distance between robbery and murder. If the government abolishes the death penalty, the difference between these two types of crime will be diminished.

But there is a limit to define: even if capital punishment is unavoidable, it would be a crime to apply it to inadequate cases. Without past facts or evidences which can justify such a punishment, we shouldn’t enforce death penalty. The lawmakers have to establish precisely the context in which the capital punishment can be announced. After all, that’s the price we have to pay to limit violence without using excessive violence.
